Default Can I remove the heater/ac control buttons???

I have a 2014 i Touring. 2.0, Automatic, 66,000 miles. It seems that one of my kids may have spilled some Pop and it got behind a couple of the bottom heater/ac control buttons. They control the fan speed, off, and the mode. When it gets cold I am unable to control the fan speed/mode because pushing any of the buttons causes all of the button to push as one. Once the interior of the car warms up the buttons will work normally. The only thing I can figure is that there is something sticky behind the buttons. Can I carefully pop the buttons off with a screwdriver and clean them, or will that damage the buttons or the assembly?
