I never said drifting was the fast way through a corner. In fact I said just the opposite. If you're sliding you are losing speed. (or not accelerating as fast as you could be if your tires weren't spinning) Your example of rally driving is an excellent example where sliding the car is necessary, but it's only due to the particular surface under the vehicle.
