'05 mazda 3 steering issue
Hi all, first post on this board. I am working on my cousins 2005 mazda 3, which lost its power steering. I had power to the pump but no operation of the pump and a warning light on the dash. We got a new pump online and I installed it two days ago. the pump works and the light is off, but I hooked up the Mac Mentor scanner to the car to see if there were any faults.
There is a fault for steering angle, and if I go into datastream, there is no value displayed for steering angle. No warning light though and the fault wont clear.
My question is, Do I need to go to the dealer and get the new Electric steering pump/module coded/programmed or do I simply have a bad steering angle sensor? the parts guy sounded like hes never sold one of these sensors, which indicated its a rare thing to go bad./
I never checked faults with the old pump installed, which would have helped to show if i had steering angle with the old pump

The steering warning light did come on once and you can feel when making fast turns there isn't quite as much assist as there should be. I don't know enough about these systems so I have no idea if it is simply a bad angle sensor or if its the programming.
I stopped at mazda the tech there said we have to call mazda and get programming info. They scheduled me in for tuesday to get the programming done. I hope this fixes it.
They've never seen a faulty steering angle sensor

keep on your toes if they come out saying "well we got it reprogrammed but......" There is a recall on the pumps and you could of gotten one replaced from mazda, if something went wrong they would have also fixed it.
Hey guys, I have a similar problem. The dealership said my angling sensors need to be replaced. My car was in an accident over a year ago and I think the repairs were poorly done, this is the result. My power steering has been cutting in & out for months. I have a 2008 Mazda3 and it was involved in the recent recall. The steering pump was replaced. But I haven't any repairs done with the sensors yet because I wanted to get another opinion and see if there was something I could do to correct the problem myself. Also, if the car was involved in an accident warranty is void, correct? Thanks for your help.
I have an 06 2.3L. After replacing the pump and with another used module, the PS light will randomly come on when I sharp turn the steering wheel like in reverse motion. The code comes back for steering wheel angle sensor 1 and 2. No CEL though. Turn the car off, then on, the light will disappear.
do I need a new steering wheel angle sensor or the car PSP module needs to be programmed? Please share your experience.

Hey, welcome to the board! Sounds like you've done a solid job so far getting the power steering back up and running. Since you’re getting a fault for the steering angle sensor and no value is showing in the data stream, it’s possible the ECU isn’t receiving input from the sensor — but it’s hard to say if that’s due to the sensor itself or a coding issue with the new pump/module.
You’re right that these steering angle sensors rarely fail, so before replacing anything, it might be worth checking if the new pump/module needs to be coded or calibrated to the car. Some replacement electric power steering units do require programming, especially if they're aftermarket.
If you don’t have access to the factory tools, a shop like Smash Repair Perth that deals with these kinds of electrical systems regularly might be able to help confirm whether coding is needed — or even just re-calibrate the steering angle sensor.
And yeah, checking faults with the old pump would’ve helped narrow it down, but hindsight is always 20/20. You’re close — just one more step to go!
