Default Mazda 2 2008 reverse gear issues

Hi all

last couple of days it has taken me more effort than usual to engage reverse gear. Always goes in eventually after declutching a couple of times but it will probably get worse.

anyone have any advise before I consider tskimg it to the garage? Gearbox oil never changed, is that worth a punt! It’s on 65000 miles.

I have a mazda2 and a Citroen c3 aircross on the aircross I had the same problem as you are experiencing the problem was the gate on the gearbox, the gate is on the outside of the gearbox where the linkage from the gear lever enters the gearbox if you open the bonnet and look inside whilst someone is operating the lever ( engine stopped) you may be able to see moving mine just needed lubricant ( a spray grease)

thanks, I did exactly this last night. I sprayed where the two cables fTom the gearstick attach to plastic ball joints. I was a bit wary of spraying around the metal parts and the part that enters the gearbox. Used white lithium grease

should I use something different and should I spray around the entry point too? Thanks

Yes use the same grease on the metal parts (that’s the gate)

thanks. Thought maybe it was one of those ‘lifetime’ situations. Wish there was a Haynes manual for the thing.

For anyone else coming here, I’ve found that since changing the gearbox oil, problem has gone away. I actually forgot I had the issue at all, so it obviously helped.
