Smile 2009 MAZDA 2 Auto - Change MV ATF & Filter

Some more work on the new to me Mazda 2 to Get All New Fluids in the Car & develop a Benchmark

Fig00 Transmission F15DG006A - MAZDA 2 FN4A-EL 4Sp Auto with Lockup Torque Converter

Background on MAZDA2 FN4A-EL:
4Sp electronically controlled automatic transaxle with Lockup Torque Converter developed by MAZDA & Ford. (Ford version 4F27E = similar but not Identical)
A four-element torque converter that includes a torque converter clutch and geartrain with two planetary gearsets, a transfer-shaft gear final drive, and a larger differential.
"Feather to Lockup Torque Converter" dependent on Vehicle Speed Sensor, Engine RPM, Vehicle Load etc Quality of the ATF matters to avoid shudder on "Feather to LockUp" & achieve smooth shifting.
Six electronically controlled solenoids for shift feel (through line pressure control), shift scheduling (through shift valve position control) and TCC (torque converter clutch) apply, controlled by pulse-width modulation (PWM).
MAZDA2 FN4A-EL uses "MAZDA M5 fluid [MAZDA MV]", the MAZDA Factory Fill Fluid was reportedly made by Idemitsu Kosan & was FULL SYNTHETIC. Mazda vehicles have "M V" embossed on the dipstick handle.
Transmission dry fill capacity: 6.7 Liters / 7 Quarts.
Noted:
MAZDA2 FN4A-EL Maximum input torque after torque converter: 270 Lb-ft (365 N-m)
MAZDA2 ZY-VE 1.5lt = 76 kilowatts of power & 137 NM of torque
SO…hopefully the Mazda 2 1.5lt N/A does not produce enough torque to Overly Stress the FN4A-EL Auto Transmission & it will have a long trouble free life, provided ATF Fluid & Filter are changed & "MAZDA M5 fluid [MAZDA MV]" is used.

Fig WM1 FN4A-EL Detail Pg221 of MAZDA2 2010 OEM WShop Manual
1 Drive Plate, 2 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor, 3 VSS, 4 Pressure Control Solenoids (Shift Solenoid A, Shift Solenoid B, Shift Solenoid C, Shift Solenoid D, Shift Solenoid E), 5 TFT Sensor, 6 Oil Seal, 7 Control Valve Body, 8 TR Switch, 9 Automatic Transaxle, 10 ATF Cooler

Interesting that the WEB Detail available Discusses Ford 4F27E/MAZDA FN4A-EL however the Dwgs shown for the MAZDA FN4A-EL swap shown positions of Solenoid B & Solenoid C among other things....recommend using the MAZDA OEM W/Shop Manual & be careful WRT MAZDA FN4A-EL V's Ford 4F27E interchangeability of parts.

Prt [1] AUTOMATIC Driveability & Shifting Diagnostics Noted:
[a] ATF fluid was light honey colour on the dip stick
['b] General driveability when driving gently was smooth
[c] No clunks on shift from park thru to N, from N to R Back to N then to Drive.
[d] In fact quite smooth for a transmission that has only had a drain & top off with MAZDA Full Synth MV ATF at 120,000kms (per the service history).
Just shows the effectiveness of Full Synthetic ATF & the nominal 30micron or better Synthetic Felt Fabric Filter
[e] In Drive, "the Up shift on swift_75% of WOT throttle acceleration to 6,00RPM" - not as smooth as it should be
[f] "Manual Down shift" under engine braking with rev step to 4500RPM from D to S & then S to L not as smooth as it should be
[g] “Manual Up shift” on swift_75% of WOT throttle acceleration to 5,00RPM L S & D not as smooth as it should be
[h] Start at bottom of steep hill at 60km_Hr & allow car to Slow to crawl at top & shift loaded back to first, was actually suprisingly quite smooth
[‘i]a little bit of a whine from first on a slow take off from stopped at Cold first start fast idle, shift from L to 2nd not as smooth as it should be
[j] Stopped on a steep hill in D. Then accelerate off normally.
[k] Stopped on a steep hill then Shift into reverse & reverse up the Hill smooth & No flaring

So all looked Good for a Fluid & Filter Change to smooth out the loaded Up Shift & engine braking Down Shift.

Prt [2] Driving the car & watching the OBD2 PIDs - Before ATF & Filter Change

Noted for Full Op Temp HWay run:
* Ambient 31Deg C
* ECT at 91-92Deg C solid
* The ATF achieved 103.7Deg C Temp_Full Op Temp at 107km_Hr
* Reduce Speed to 60km_Hr & ATF Temp recovers to 88Deg C
Park in the Driveway after full Op Temp Hway Run, ECT 92Deg C Temp rises with time to 100 Deg C, the Thermostatic Fans cut in & in 30 seconds ECT returns to 92Deg C. Cycle repeats
Mazda 2 ATF Runs considerably hotter than a 2006 1ZZFE & 2009 2ZRFE Corolla....High Quality Full Synthetic MUST be used

#########

Noted the ATF fluid was light honey colour on the dip stick not deep red nor dark brown.

Some say Mazda ATF M-V (Type M-5) P/N 0000-77-112E-01 is made by Idemitsu. Idemitsu M5 PN is 30040092-75000C020 for qt.
Mazda ATF is red, MSDS for Idemistsu says can be red or clear.

Purchased in Oz:
8lt MAZDA Full Synth MV ATF Part No 33771184. $176
Ryco Transmission Filter Kit - RTK171 $45

Prt[3] New Filter Installed

Ryco Transmission Filter Kit - RTK171
Kit comes with a Gasket
"Original Mazda Factory Install" used Gasket Goo don’t think the pan had ever been dropped on my transmission

Poured "New MAZDA Full Synth MV ATF" down the dipstick into the Transmission

Up to Op Temp
New ATF down the DipStick while cycling through the gears, until the return line from the radiator runs clean ATF.

#########
Prt [4] Driveability & Shifting Diagnostics Repeated:

[a] New ATF fluid was “Traditional Pink colour” with the New ATF Smell
['b] General driveability when driving gently was smoother eg first start from Cold & the first shift in Drive at elevated cold idle from L to 2nd
[c] No clunks on shift from park thru to N, from N to R Back to N then to Drive.
[d] Smoothness improved
[e] In Drive, "the Up shift on swift_75% of WOT throttle acceleration to 6,00RPM" - very smooth as it should be
[f] "Manual Down shift" under engine braking with rev step to 4500RPM from D to S & then S to L, very smooth as it should be
[g] “Manual Up shift” on swift_75% of WOT throttle acceleration to 5,00RPM L S & D, very smooth as it should be
[h] Start at bottom of steep hill at 60km_Hr & allow car to Slow to crawl at top & shift loaded back to first, very smooth as it should be
[‘i] Reduced whine from first on a slow take off from stopped, barely noticeable
[j] Stopped on a steep hill then in D. Then accelerate off normally. very smooth as it should be
[k] Stopped on a steep hill then Shift into reverse & reverse up the Hill smooth & No flaring. very smooth as it should be.
=>> So that is a WIN!

Prt [5] Driving the car & watching the OBD2 PIDs - After ATF & Filter Change

Noted for Full Op Temp HWay run:
* Ambient 33Deg C
* ECT at 91-92Deg C solid
* The ATF achieved 103.7Deg C Temp_Full Op Temp at 110km_Hr
* Reduce Speed to 60km_Hr & ATF Temp recovers to 88Deg C
Park in the Driveway after full Op Temp Hway Run, ECT 92Deg C Temp rises with time to 100 Deg C, the Thermostatic Fans cut in & in 30 seconds ECT returns to 92Deg C. Cycle repeats

So even after the NEW ATF Install the Mazda 2 ATF Temp Runs at up to 103.7 Deg C, that is considerably hotter than a 2006 1ZZFE & 2009 2ZRFE Corolla.

#########
#########
What are others seeing for a DE Mazda 2 (2007 to 2014) WRT ATF Temp during a full OP Temp HWay Run?
?ATF Temp as high as 103.7 Deg C?

Thx
Rob
