Stuttering sound when downshifting

I have a 2003 Mazda Tribute V6 and it has started to stutter when the automatic transmission downshifts. The problem has been intermittant, but now is getting worse. I have also noticed that when going up a hill the stutteris much worse.None of my lights come on when this happens. Any suggestions?
