Default High RPM

when you start a car it revs to maybe 1000 rpm and comes down to 750 quickly. all good. My v6 tribute jumps to 2300 rpm and then comes down quickly. What is making it go to 2300 instead of the usual 1000 / 1200. Thanks

The Tributes have a reputation for the engine management revving the engine after a cold start, not sure why or whether it is common to other models with the same engine...

Does it hot or cold. If i disconnect the idle control valve it only goes to 1000 rpm. Drops down immediatley to nearly stall however does not. Will idle then at about 500 rpm

Your in the right spot. The Idle Air Control valve is prone to a sludge/carbon build up that will make it operate on the sluggish side. You can remove it and clean it with carb spray or just replace it and be done with it. If you opt the replacement route, do a base idle relearn procedure. It may not need it but it's always a prudent idea. Disconnect the battery, replace the IAC, hook battery back up. Disconnecting the battery while replacing the IAC allows the Keep Alive Memory to reset. Start the car, let it idle for 2-3 mins, put in gear and idle for an additional 2-3 mins. That will let the PCM learn the new IAC.
