Gear stuck in reverse
I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute that is stuck in reverse. The car will not start and I can’t get it out of gear. I can move the steering wheel and roll the car forward and backwards as if it were in neutral. However, it will not start or get out of reverse. I had the transmission rebuilt about two and half years ago and it’s been running fine until now. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it out of gear so that it can start?

I had the exact same problem on my 2001 last week, the cable that goes between the shifter lever and the transmittion came loose ( worn out rod ends). 1) You can look up the procedure to change the cable on a Haynes repair manual ( Escape Tribute 2001-2007) This manual is about $ 20 at any auto parts store. Ref: Chapter 7B-2 paragraph 3. The cable P/N is MZEC01-40-500E and is $ 64.98 Mazda Dealer. For tools all you need is a Phillips screw driver and pliers.
