Brake booster

Hi,

Have just bought a 2001 3.0 V6 Tribute, and the brake pedal has started hissing.

I have read that the brake booster/servo will need to be changed, but I need to know if the 3.0 one is the same as a 2.0 litre one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Form your description, I would say the diaphragm in the power brake booster failed. Hissing worse when you apply the brakes?

Whenever a "Will it fit" question is asked, I pull up one of the big box auto parts stores and check what they list for both vehicles. The one I looked at was the same part number for both 2.0L and 3.0L so I would say yes.

The Tribute is a re-badged Ford Escape so one from that vehicle would also fit. Prices here were not too terrible for the booster, so I would consider a out of the box unit before a out of the salvage yard unit.

Depending on how much room you have, you might be able to unbolt the master cylinder and move it enough to service the booster without having to remove the brake lines. That saves time by not having to bleed the brakes, but it's not always a possibility.

Thanks for your reply.

The hiss STOPS when the pedal is pressed, but it doesn't hiss all the time.

Will see what prices my local Mazda/Ford dealer comes up with.

I've had to replaced a few Tribute & Escape Brake Boosters over the years. Weird noise too.

Struggling to source one in the UK (new or used).

Is it worth considering getting one from the US, or would the hole for the vacuum pipe be on the wrong side of the unit seeing as I have a RHD vehicle?

Good question. For some reason, I can't imagine the manufactures re-tooling for a booster vacuum port. Wonder if you could just flip it 180 degrees to change the orientation of the port. In my tiny brain it seems like it would work, seeing the unit doesn't contain fluid and should function in any position.

You could try any of the other right hand drive countries as well such as Australia and at the current exchange rate the only thing that might bite would be shipping and time
