2008 Tribute Steering Problems

I have a 2008 Tribute 2WD V6 that is having steering issues.
1. Lower intermediate steering shaft broke off at the lower U joint and has been replaced
2. After replacing shaft the power steering is not working, very difficult to turn steering wheel. If the front end is lifted off the ground the steering is smooth.
3. The torque sensor recall has not been done because I was unaware until all this happened. I called the closest dealership which is an hour away and they said I’d have to bring the vehicle in. I don’t feel comfortable driving that far with no power steering.
4. Steering is easier in reverse.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA I’ve learned a lot in the past week about the mechanical workings of the Tribute, but I can’t find a straight forward answer. I’ll be able to scan for codes tomorrow.

Do you know why the lower steering shaft broke? That is not normal - Ive not heard of a steering column component just breaking, ever???

Have no idea how it happened. I thought it was strange. Adding some photos.

Bizarre, looks more cut than sheared and no torsional distortion that I’d expect to see....
