Thinking about buying a RX-8(need help)

Hey everyone I am thinking about buying a 2010 Rx-8 R3 roughly 24,000 miles for 23 grand. First how much u guys think I can haggle at the dealer ship to lower the costs?

2nd is there a big difference between the ride quality of the R-3 and Grand touring, any preference to pick either one? I like the R-3 b/c of the rims but def. would love having the sunroof in grand touring.

I live in the North, so during the cold season what should I do to keep my car safe, I understand that these cars need to warm up so theres no flooding. Do I have to let the engine warm up before driving or am I just able to drive the car from start at any outside temperature?

I heard these cars suck during the winter even with winter tires, so do you guys store it for the winter?

Any things I should know about this car even though I am a noob that is critical to my decision making for this car?

Also last thing for now, how much do you guys pay for car insurance for full coverage???

Thanks!!

The only thing i can contribute to this is when you put on Winter tires, put a narrower tire on. Wide tires are useless in winter.

The rx-8 is a great car if your buying it for performance and not to go get groceries! The car does not need to b warmed up prior to driving. The flooding issue consists of people starting the car backing it out if the garage and shutting it off right away then washing it or messing with it and then starting it back up and parking in the garage again. Doing this doesn't allow the fuel to be properly burned off the spark plugs causing it to soak into any carbon built on the plug. Most of the people who have this issue dont drive their car hard. It has an 8500 rpm red line for a reason! Very fun car (not the automatic) plenty of power.

also looking

I am also looking for an RX-8 and have found several reasonably priced in the area. What are the upgrades with the touring package on an 04-06?

Whats the average time to keep the car running just incase I gotta move it short distance, or do I just wait till the temp needle is in the middle?

Not to sure, but being a noob to thinking about buying an Rx-8, even I know that buying the 04-06 models are a bad idea even if your on a budget.

1. Most of them are high mileage = drivers beating up their cars overtime with all the fun driving that comes out of driving an Rx8

2. Reading from the forums those models have a lot of mechanical issues and recalls.

3. Even though the average costs maybe 9-12 grand for those cars, be ready to splurge 4-7 grand on repairs OR

you could save up a little bit more and buy the 2nd gen. Rx8 (09-11) for 15- 19 grand and just finance the car for 60 months and worry less about repairs and enjoy driving a sports car.

There is a shut down procedure. Hold the rpm at 4k for 10sec then turn the ignition off without taking your food off the throttle till the engine shuts off. If u do this it doesn't matter how long the engine has been running. You only need to do this if the engine is cold

Early rx-8's are a bad idea. Unless u know for a fact that the car has been driven hard! Most cars u would never buy if u knew the car had been driven hard. The rx-8 is different! If the car has been driven hard they will last longer and dont have half the problems as the ones that people take it easy on. From 04-06 mazda calibrated the PCM wrong and the metering oil pump was not injecting enough oil into the rotor housings causing loss of compression due to bad apex seals. They had a mass recall to reprogram the PCM for this issue and also check the engines for damage. They replaced roughly 1 out of 4 engines that came in for this recall. So if u find an older one that your interested in write down the vin number and call a mazda dealership and find out how many engines have been replaced in it. 04-05 on some of them have had 2-3 motors replaced before they fixed the oil issue. Only buy it if the motor was replaced after 2006.
