Protege5guy's '86 RX7 Project

Hey all, i recently purchased a 86 rx7 that was a theft attempt, they messed up the ignition switch and unfortunately the steering is locked in such a way that i can't get at the bolt below the rubber boot on the column(inside the engine bay). I have everything apart inside the car, i was just wondering if there were a way to 1:unlock the steering 2: Get the column out another way? Also, if i remove the rubber boot can i just take the column apart there? It would cost me more to tow the car to a locksmith so i thought i would give this a try. Or do i bite the bullet and tow it. On dollies of course, its an automatic.

Rebuild or Replace?

Well, i got my ignition fixed on my 86 rx7. Checked all the fluids, topped up what was low and got the car started on the first try. This past weekend after moving the car over to the other garage stall i noticed a small pool of offwhite greasy stuff on the garage floor where my car once sat. I'm no master mechanic but i do know thats not a good sign. Obviously the motor has to be pulled and probably rebuilt. Is it worth rebuilding the 13b non turbo and probably street porting it or should i save a little more and upgrade to a turbo or (wish) 3rotor with sequential twins. A complete rebuild kit is approximately $900, and i found a 13b turbo for sale for $1400. My goal for this car is to build it into a cool street car that"ll turn heads and show at some local shows. My parts car may become a 1/4 mile car.

You are right, there are alot of questions. I want to do things right. I'm not in a rush so wont do anything half-assed. The site selling that turbo engine states that they do not offer any warranty on rotary engines. I would like to rebuild this engine anyway so i can learn more about it as i go. And if there are any safe mods that can be done to the 13b non-turbo i'd be willing to have them done. I ordered the haynes manual. I bought the car for $400, so was thrilled when it started. The body and frame are in great shape for the year. Thanks for the reply.

I hope you don't mind but I combined all your posts (so far) into one thread. But I must apolgize for being in a hurry and not combining the threads first. (Ooop!!)

I was thinking since it is a project that keeping it all together in one place might be the easiest way to a see a start to finish... a history from now forward if you will?

I'm currently waiting for the rest of the vid to download so I can watch it w/o interuption.... Looks good so far!!
