As long as the driver door opens with the remote and all doors lock with the remote, why worry?
I know on mine if I press the unlock button on remote twice all doors open, and if I hold it down, the front windows roll down!?

In other words, when you pull the key, step out of the car and push "lock" you get nothing.
It's an electrical issue. Your power locks should get power from a circuit that is always on, not switched by the ignition key. Somebody must have connected the wire wrong. Get a typical wiring diagram of any Mazda of that vintage and compare your wiring to that.
