89 mazda rx7

so basically im car dumb but,

my friends brother is selling rather a 89 or a 90 and he said he would sell it to me for 1000 but the problem is i think he said the pistons leak gas and than cause the engine to flood so basically it would need to pistons is this expensive? my uncle is a mechanic and he would probally do the work but not if its to hard to do?

do you think its worth buying and is it to hard to fix?

They do not have pistons. It is a rotary engine and quite expensive to replace the engine. It does not necesarily need an engine though as they were prone to flooding out when started cold. An exhaust restriction/poor tune/dirty injectors/bad fuel pressure regulator etc could easily be the problem. A compression test would be in order to tell if it needs an engine.

so try unflooding it......buy puming the gass peddle when you crank it....if that doesn't work then take the EGI fuse out... this will diable the fule injectors....crank the car a 4 or 5 times for 6 sec...each time. More then 6 sec will damage the starter. This should perg all the gass in the more. Then replace the fuse and start it up....the tack won't work for some reason untill you turn the car off and then back on. Do your compresion test. And Rotory engions aren't more expencive to replace then the more from any other sports car. Remember this car wasn't built to be drivin by everyone everwear. It was a spots car. You can rebuilt it at home for around a grand if you only have to replce the seals.

What's the mileage on the car? Like InABox posted, those are the steps for unflooding it. If that is the problem.

It depends on what your idea of expensive is. I have replaced hundreds. To do it right will be 3k plus. The car is not worth what you would have in it. If you love the car and plan to keep it then it may be worth it to you. Holding the gas pedal to the floor will usually enable it to start without flooding. Pumping the gas pedal achieves nothing.
