RE: what oil are u running in your protege?
Hey I am new to the forum. To answer your question, I have a 99 protege and I have been using Castrol Synthetic 5w30 since my car was 75K miles and now is 136K. I replace every 5-6K miles. My engine is still running fine. My car been through a lot, I have driven this car on 1K + miles road trip every other month back when this car was still under 100K miles. Synthetic oil had been pretty good for my car. As for what brand to use, not sure if they are any different, I onlyused Castrol all my life just because I like it, other brands are probably about the same I assume. And one thing though, don't even bother to add those oil additive of any kind. I used to use them and they are such a waste of money, don't feel any different at all. Sythetic, however, I can feel the car got more smooth and slightly more power. I never go back ever since.
As for what weight, it depends on the kind of weather temperature range where you live at. If you live at a colder place, you might have to use 10w-30 or 10w-40 like what wsoape281 said. I live in San Diego, Cali where temperature never get colder than 50 degrees nor hotter than 100 degrees, so 5w-30 is more than enough. Hope that helps! |

oh it does help. so what do u think of Royal Purple? does it realy work the way they say it does or is it just a waste of $$?

RE: what oil are u running in your protege?
i haven't been able to tell a difference between royal purple and castrol syntec. i haven't done long-term testing, but i know that just about any synthetic is going to add about the same amount of hp and the same amount of protection. the differences will be so small that you won't really even notice.

03 Protege. Use 5w-30 synthetic in winter and 10w-30 in summer.
