i have a 2001 protege 1.6l and the transmission tends to rev into the next to where one time it chirped tired going into third since then i flushes fluids usinf seafoam trans tune put in mercron V like said and lucas since then its been a lot better but its not like the gears are worn its like the changing of the gears are worn i added transx once and it worked out great for a while then wore off in about 3,000 miles does anyone know what i can do i dont want it rebuilt cause the body isnt in good enough shape to want to keep the car for a long time but i need the advice....... treatments small repair whatever thanks!!!! oh and it has about 173,XXX miles on it

I would see how much a transmission shop will charge to just diagnose the issue. Might cost $75-$100, but you'll get an answer.
If it's shot, you might consider swapping in a used one. car-part.com is a good place to search, I've seen prices run $350 - $500 used and most yards offer a short term warranty on the part. You'll just have to manage the labor part of it, but removal and install is not that bad. Rebuilding yours isn't gonna be worth it, IMO.

if its the gears that are grinding its your syncro's that need to be replaced if your having a hard time changing gears with no grind it could be the bushing that prevents your shifter cable/bar and the gear selector bar from rubbing together but if your sure your gears are not the problem i would look into those first

well i got my engine problem fixed and now its shifting a lot better oddly but im just going to run it til it dies and replace it with a 5 speed lol :) but thanks for the advice
