Timing belt inspection
 

Hello,

I just got an 01 with a 1.6L engine. It has 108K miles and last owner is unsure if timing belt was ever replaced. I would like to inspect but am unsure what to remove. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I assume that if it's an original, I'll be able to tell?

you probably won't be able to tell. you need to pull the motor mount on the front cover, then pull the timing cover on the front of the motor. you are looking for shredding, grooving, and oil. any of those and you need a new timing belt. if you have oil, you need new crank and cam seals.

I replaced my timing belt It took six hours. Unless you have the book and all the tools to do this job don't even start it. It will take two people to do it. If you have a buddy the time and the stuff to do it its one of the best feelings when you put it all back together and it cranksright up.

i did mine by myself, but a second person would have helped a lot on setting the timing. go ahead and do the water pump, crank seal, and cam seals while you are in there.

How did you get the crank bolt off?Impact?Has anyone done a write up with photos on here to do this?Saw a video on youtube that shows this.Just looks time consuming.I if did not break or the tensioner spring did not break it should be still in time.

I got the crank bolt off by putting the car in 5th gear slepped a screw driver in the brake rotor against the bracket and use a four foot brake pipe on the end of a ratchet. I tried a breaker bar but there was to much give in the bar

ok-How did you retorque it.better late than never.I had the job done last Wednesday.Used an impact, but took a touch of heat to get it and used the impact to run it back on.No easy way to hold the crank on an automatic would of liked to use a torque wrench.Did find a video of a guy that just did one like mine.Videoed the whole process.thanks
