Is a sway bar really necessary?
 

All four of my sway bar links are shot. I think I blew them out when I caught air over some railroad tracks while driving my daughter to the emergency room. Anyway, they are shot. Dealer says $450 to replace all four. Even if I did it myself I am looking at about $200 in materials. All this in a '95 Protege with 115,000 miles. I am thinking about not replacing them, maybe even removing all the broken links and the bars. Would there be any problem driving without sway bars? Anything dangerous?

Would probably not be dangerous, but vehicle handling around corners would be horrible. Not recommend to remove completly. Check out you local wrecking yard for cost on some good used ones. Don't think you will like ride as well with them gone but if you are curious, disconnect them and zip tie out of the way before trying to remove. Front sway bar will be extremely difficult to remove.

I would not recommend removing them, it would still be safe to drive but you will sacrifice alot of handling. the 97and 8 dx's didn't come with rears, but I plan on on getting them off of a ES. There is way to much body roll in cornering.

YES SWAY BAR LINK KITS ARE PART OF THE SUSPENSION AND DO HAVE A PURPOSE IN KEEPING THE VEHICLE STABLE.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET USED ONES....AS THEY ARE A RUBBER BUSHING AND "WILL" WEAR ALOT FASTER ,WHY SPEND THE MONEY ON USED CRAP AND ON GOOD LABOUR.YOU WILL SPEND MORE MONEY IN LABOUR IF YOU BUY USED SWAY BAR LINKS.
