Steering free play

Hey guys, so Ive had my protege for about 6 months or so now. Recently I noticed theres some free play, especially on the highway which is flat out dangerous. Steering goes numb for a second and then bites back on. Now my wife and my kid use the car as well and that really scares me. Other thing is its so random, it doesn't always happen. I had a ball joint, link kit and tie rod replaced on the car months ago. Not sure if theyre going bad or just need some adjustment. Any other recommendations?

If there is steering play you should be able to feel it while parked and idling. Roll down the window, pull the parking brake and put it in neutral. Step out and put your right hand on the steering wheel and the left on the tire. When you turn the steering wheel the tire should move immediately. If the steering wheel moves more than 5 mm before you feel the tire changing direction you have significant play. You could do the same on the right side but you need somebody's help.
Other test: put the front of the car on jack stands. Grab a wheel at 3and 9 o'clock and push left/right. Do you feel or hear a knock?
The new parts should be fine, but there may be play in the "inner tie rod ends".

Maybe there is an issue with the power steering pump? Check the belt tension and fluid level.

thanks for the reply, I had a 50 point inspection done when I did an oil change recently and they told me that driver side ball joint is loose. Im guessing that could be the culprit?

Yes. Even though I would have thought the tie rod ends are to blame. Get that lower ball joint replaced asap. If it snaps it will look like this:http://www.freewebs.com/toyotasucks/...balljoint1.jpg
