really noisy engine
 

We have a protege 1995 and the engine run like the oil pump is not working at all!
so far we have changed the oil pump,cams,lifter,and we have rebuilt the bottom(rings,connecting rod bearing,etc...)
when we look at the head without the valve cover(when the engine is running) we can't see no oil coming from the pan,completely dry!
that why we have changed the oil pump,but without success.So i was wondering if the head could be the problem(the head have been previously changed with another one from the salvage yard,due to a crack...the cause? a bad radiator!) since then the engine is really noisy.Any suggestion???

Did you use a NEW oil pump...if so, did you prime it first? If you re-used the original oil pick-up tube, did you clean the filter screen on it before installing?

One other thing to add with bkey71. Need to keep in mind where the oil starts and ends up at. Oil is picked up at the pick-up screen by the oil pump, sent to filter for filtering, back to block and passages inside. In the block the passage tees upward past the oil pressure sending unit, thru a port between block and cylinder head and then into passages in the head and onto camshafts. If you take out the oil sending unit and start it up it will at least tell you where the oil pressure loss is at. No oil shooting out would point you down into the block, pump, etc. Oil coming out of the sending unit hole would then tell you that pump, pick-up etc are doing there job but oil is getting blocked from the cams by an incorrectly installed headgasket that is blocking the hole, wrong head, or blocked passages in the head.

I got oil pressure by the sending unit,and the head gasket have been install corectly,we have remove and check(more than one time)the cams and the lifter holes but noting wrong was found.


Excuse me with the dumd question but ,how do prime a oil pump?
obviously,we have no problem with the pressure because we have a good reading at the sending unit.

for now the car run like a diesel on a really cold morning :)

If you have good pressure at the pump, then priming the oil pump is not the problem.

You need to re-read babyhuey's response, he explains what reasons there are for not getting oil in the cylinder head.


If you have no oil getting to the head there is a blockage somewhere. If worse comes to worse remove the head and crank the engine to see where oil squirts from and goes into the head and follow that. Follow the path.
