mazda familia 1999 stalling

Mazda familia/323/protege (bj5p) 1999-1500cc auto. The car jerks forward like in a peel off when driving and changing gears. At times it will not go into reverse right away, have take it out and then put it into reverse several times before it engages. Then at times it just stalls without warning. The temp. gauge used to fluctuate erratically when i climbed hills but I change the thermostat and it has stopped. How can I help myself?
