Knocking sound when stopping [front suspension]

1st post. Have a '03 DX with 74,000 miles. Recentlydeveloped a "knocking sound" from the front suspension when coming to a stop. It's not from braking, instead I only hear it as the car in about to stop [even with foot off the brake]. Is this the ball joints? Also it "whines" at start up and sometimes at idle [worse with air on]. At what point do you replace the engine belts? Kinda hard to tell but it looks like one of the smaller one's is a bit frayed. Thanks in advance!

74,000 miles, its' time to replace the belts, especially if one is frayed. It's also time to do the timing belt if you haven't done it. As for your knocking sound, I would look at the rubbers on the front sway bar. If they are damaged, That sway bar would knock against the chassis.

could be the ball-joints, but you would feel them on the highway and your tires would wear uneven
