Interference engine, or non?
Greetings all, just bought my daughter a 2000 Protege DX. 105,000 miles on it, great shape, seems like a nice little car.
Unfortunately for me, it has no maintenance records. Based on the mileage, I'm willing to bet the timing belt has not been replaced. So what I'm wondering is, is this one of those engines that will be substantially damaged by a broken belt, or just stopped in it's tracks?
You all know the answer I'm hoping to hear. LOL
Thanks!

I have a 2000 Protege LX. It's a non-interference engine. I bought mine with 130,000 miles on it about a year ago.
When I replaced the timing belt it looked like the original and it looked in good shape.
That is a low mileage Protege you bought.

My '97 323 1.3L is non-interference, and even when I replaced the head with the incorrect one and smashed the valves with the pistons the pistons were perfectly fine, every valve was bent but that was ok, was the wrong head anyways.
