95 Protege instrument panel removal
Hello there.
it is very important that before you attempt to remove the instrument cluster, you disconnect the battery negative terminal. As you may be working around air-bags, you don't wan't them accidentially going off!
To get at the rear of the instrument cluster, you will essentially have to remove the dash board. This is an involved process requiring a specific procedure of panel, console and electrical disconnection. It is not difficult if you are patient and organized with the pieces you remove so they can be re-assembled in the correct order.
It would take an long involved written description to direct you in this procedure, so I would strongly recommend that you get a manual such as the Hanes Repair Manual #61015 - Mazda 323 & Protege 1990 thru 2000. This is usually about $15.00 at most Auto Parts stores (Napa eg.)
In this manual there is a detailed break-down with diagrams in chapter 11 that would be invaluable to you. It would come in handy for any other repairs you may want to attempt as well!
Good luck with it!
