IAC Valve Location

IAC Valve Location
I own a 98 Mazda Protege, recently it has developed a problem on cold starts. It begins to idle extremely rough and almost stalls, however does not.
I have changed the spark plugs and wire set. This did not help so I had a mechanic take a look at it. He said that my distributor cap and rotor need replacing (that is easy for me to do), the Idle Speed Control Motor (the IAC valve?) needs replacing. This part brand new is $700, the mechanic is offering a part from an auto wrecker at $200. I can get the same part from another auto wrecker for $25 (but no warranty or guarantee).
I have consulted several repair manuals, online forums, pictures, and I am not 100% certain where the IAC valve is on my motor (1.5L). Can somebody please tell me where it is, and whether it is easy or recommended to replace the part myself.
Thank you in advance.

dude i'm having the same problem.. no idea where it is.. lol.. i've got a 1988 1.3L 323 hatch..
its supposed to be on the throttle body, though i have seen a couple on the intake manifold as well.. its supposed to be held (on some engines) by two 10mm bolts, and look a bit like a motor, with an electrical connection to it..
good luck finding it, i'm planning to remove my airbox and nose around my intake manifold to see if i can find it, have spotted what i think is the IAC..
but are you sure its the IAC valve thats giving you trouble? mine acts up after heating to running temp and if the air conditioning is on.. sometimes when the compressor switches on the engine just dies, i've tried adjusting the air conditioning idle switch, and replaced a faulty vacuum switch in the process with only a slight improvement..
you might also want to consider cleaning it instead of replacing it, you just need some choke cleaner.. from my research it seems easy enough for a DIY mechanic.. there are some videos on youtube showing where and how its done.. check it out and good luck..
