Default full size spare in the Protege sedan

I have a 1999 Mazda Protege ES sedan.

I have just completed putting in a full size spare with no problems.

I noticed a full size spare should fit in the well, but would need some minor adjustments

I sliced the three U shaped brackets holding up the donut with a sawzall and bent the metal back and forth until they broke free. This gives you a couple of inches and lets the wheel fit in the well nice.

I ground off any sharp edges and sprayed some rubberized undercoat in the well so it looks pretty sharp.

For a holddown, I used a wheel bearing cap and trimmed the flange off.
I then drilled a hole for the bolt.

I inverted it and used a rubber tub gasket so the metal would not rub on the alloy wheel.

I then shortened the original bolt since the stock bolt was now too long

The carpet fit better without the cardboard underneath it so I left it out.

It fits well and looks stock. It does not stick up very much.

I was lucky to get 4 stock rims and 4 new tires for well under $200

I only needed one for a spare but I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
