I posted this as a reply to another horn question, but am reposting as a separate thread.

I was at a stoplight, idling as usual, and my horn started blaring. I didn't realize it was me until people started to drive slower around me thinking I needed to get over. It eventually stopped (probably via a pothole) and then happened again. That time I hit the steering wheel to stop it. I would like to disconnect it (at least temporarily) if I can.

And again the next evening (it was just as cold out), the horn went off in short spurts. It happened mostly when I turned the steering wheel (and coincidentally when people were trying to cross against the light). With my seat belt sensor also loose somewhere, I'm afraid my battery will die sooner than expected. But more importantly, I'm worried about causing an accident or heart attack from someone when the horn goes off unexpectedly. I would like to know how to check the horn in the steering column (it seems really sensitive to the touch now). Is it a short, or the contacts connecting when I turn or hit rough road? I work in Berkeley and live in Oakland, CA. I am not sure of where I should take it for electrical problems (most reg (cheaper?) mechanics don't do this type of repair)

First you've got to tell the the year of Protege you have, Since that mind reading thing isn't working for me.

We can probably figure this out. More than likely the problem is on the horn side.

BTW the way, there is a specialized Mazda junkyard in Rancho Cordova, about an hour and a half out of Oakland, that can help you out for parts, so don't spend alot of money on parts before checking with them. Here's a link to there web site http://www.mazdarecycling.com/

 

yes the year is important here because the buttons were slightly different designs on different years. sounds like there is just something loose in the steering wheel or the horn button.
