Filler tube

ok I need some help, PLZ!!!! I have a 97 protoge dx and the check engine light has been on. 169.00 later i have been told its an evac code, it was smoke checked and found a leak on the fill tube between the tank and the neck. The dealership was kind enough to offer me a fill tube at 300.00 plus labor. I have been looking all over the net for the part and all i can find is an OEM rubber replacement hose which is made for gasoline. what i need to know is do i have to stay with the metal pipe or will the 25 dollar rubber pipe work? I really need to know soon as i need an inspection. also if it has to be the metal one does anyone know of a website that would sell it???? thank you for your time and help.

RE: Filler tube

The $25 rubber hose is not going to work unless that is the section that is causing the leak. There are three sections to your fuel filler pipe. A long metal section that bolts to the car body and is where you would insert the gas nozzle. This retails for $234.40. There is another metal pipe section that attaches to the fuel tank and has a gasket that retails for $28.10. Between these two metal pipes isa flexible rubber hose that retails for $48.55. Are they planning on replacing all three sections of the pipe or just one?? Do you know which part has the leak? You can get OE replacement parts discounted at onlinemazdaparts.com or you might just try and call a few wrecking yards.

They do not have a link where you can look at an exploded view of the fuel tank. Do not know of one online off top of my head either. I could fax you a copy of the exploded view from parts computer but it just looks like a great jumble of parts. If it is only the part numbers you are in need of I do have those. The upper/expensive metal pipe is OE part #BC4C-42-210B. The metal pipe that attaches to the fuel tank is #BC1M-42-11X and the gasket that goes between the pipe and tank is #BC1M-42-114. The flexible rubber hose between the two is #BG1N-42-231B.
