RE: error codes

P1000 just means that the engine codes were cleared or the battery was disconnected and the engine computer has not run all of its system monitors yet. Is not a big deal. The P0170 is a fuel trim malfunction code. It means that your engine is running either too rich or too lean but is not specific on which one it is as you must have an older Protege model. What model year is your Protege and what is the size of the engine by the way?? You would need to have a scan tool that is capable of getting the Freeze Frame Data stored when the code was set to tell you if the engine is too rich or lean. You need to know the value for SHRTFT1 and LONGFT1 and if the number is a positive or negative number. That will tell you if your engine is too rich or too lean.
