Engine Codes?

Default Engine Codes?

is there a way to get engine codes on a 1990 protege without having to take it to a dealership or needing a computer....something like counting flashing lights on the cpu or something? thanks

also where is the connector that i have to bridge? and 'Grounding the single green connector' means i just have to bridge the other two terminals that are shaded gray, but NOT labled? or do i have to ground them to a nut or something in the car? thanks a lot

1990 should not be using the "single green connector but instead the diagnosis connector. This is located just to the rear of your battery and below the wiper motor and should be a black or gray box with DIAGNOSIS imprinted on top. Pic below shows location. If you open up the cover as shown in second pic there is a connector diagram on the underside of the cover. You want to either use a jumper wire and short the pin labeled TEN to ground point on car or use a paper clip to bridge the TEN and GND pins. Once that is done then get in the car and turn key to RUN position. CEL should come on solid and then go off. If any codes are stored it will then begin to flash. Long flashes are tens digit and short flashes are ones digit. ie 8 short flashes and then repeats would be a code 8. One long flash followed by 5 short would be code 15. If there are two codes then it will output the first, then the second, then repeat with first again. Codes available for that year would be 2,3,8,9,10,12,14,15,17,25,26,34,41.

thank for the help, i went online this morning and i found another site that said bridge the 'TEN' to the 'GRD' and it worked....

i got some weird codes....to test it i unplugged the MAF and that how i realized that it was not in diagnosis mode. so when i got it to work i wrote down all the codes, and i erased them. my girlfriend is driving the car right now and the light came back on, so when she gets back i'll check the codes again.

on a side note, do the codes come in numerical order?...1,2,3,4... or do they jump around? cause i don't know if one of the codes i got was a 10 and a 15 or a 25. thanks for all the help.

They should come up in numerical order from lowest 2 to highest 41.

i got the codes... it looks like it's a bad O2 sensor. i got a code 15 and 17. now i need to know what the easiest way to change out an O2 sensor. i've done it before on a honda del-sol, and i remember it being hard as hell to get unscrewed due to the rust build-up or the whatever buid-up...i remember it being pretty simple though, but is there a way to get the old one out easier? and would it be really bad for the car to be driven for a few days with a bad O2 sensor, or should it not be driven until it's replaced? do you think that bad spark plugs might be setting of a bad O2 sensor code? thanks a lot

here's an update... i changed the o2 sensor with a borrowed o2 sensor from autozone ( i didn't know that they loan tools for free, you have to leave a deposit but they give it back to you when you return the tool) that might help someone that doesn't know where to borrow tools from... anyway i changed the o2 sensor and it fixed the problem.......... AND WITH MY LUCK!!! Right after we were driving up to the mountains for some swimming AND THE WATER PUMP BELT BREAKS!!! IN THE MOUNTAINS!!! I of course had a DEAD cell phone and finally hitched a ride and we got AAA to tow it to my house. then my friend came over and we replaced both belts, the other was about to go. it took us about an hour and a half to do. the hard part was figuring out which bolt to loosen to get the belt off and get the new ones on.

we'll see how this goes.
