Default Crank shaft position sensor 96 protege

I had a JDM engine imported and there is no crank shaft position sensor on it, will it hurt anything to not have one on it? since there wasn't one on it in Japan? It runs great though. The only thing bad I can see with this is the annoying check engine light.
Already tried to clear with a OBD2 and it comes back on.
thanks

Default yes you need a CPS

to sense the position of the crankshaft.if its running alright and you can live with the check engine light, then i guess you dont need one.the reason you cant clear it is because its finding a fault in the CPS circuit(no sensor) so it will keep returning. black tape over the light works .if you can find one then just put one in,ask the guy you bought it from if he has one

I bought the engine from Japan... and the spot the sensor is supposed to be in is not threaded... so in turn there wasn't one needed on it in Japan.. so i just registered my car to a place it doesn't need emissions and just got tabs that way =D
