Default Automatic Transmission Stuck in "SportAT" Mode?

My gf's car will not go into automatic. The dash gear indicator light does not, well, indicate what gear (P,R,D,M) the transmission is in [the dash]. When the gear selector is in Drive, in makes an occasional noise right under the shift lever. When the car is put into drive, the LED that tells you what gear you are in, starts at 2nd, goes to 1st, goes to 2nd, and back to 1st, all when stopped. And, when the car is in Drive, it will not up-shift, or down-shift automatically, thus, you must move it over to the +/- mode to accomplish this.

Any advice is appreciated. I want to fix this myself, but do not know where to begin. I have checked the auto fluid, it's fine. I tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, but no luck.

(I will be posting this on other Mazda forums.)
