Alternator pulley not spinning and lots of smoke when car starts
Hello fellow users I am new to this forum, I own a 2003 Mazda protege es that has been sitting in the driveway for the past 7 months. It has not been started for some time and finally decided to get it running again, after a tune up, brake pad replacement and putting in a new battery i fired it up. The car starts up fine but almost immediately after it started to squeal loudly and I noticed smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine, I quickly shut it off and went to take a look, my buddy and I started it up again this time with him looking in the area and realized that the alternator belt and pulley were not spining and that was the source of the white smoke. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong and how to fix this? My guess is that the alternator has seized up due to the car not being started regularly while sitting thru winter. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

99.99% sure your alternator has seized up.
It maybe possible to overhaul it, otherwise it will require replacement. Check the condition of the drive belts too. |
Yep. Remove the belt and then spin each pulley by hand. Well, except the crank pulley.

Make sure a.c. is off
It could be ur a.c. compressor locked up and not allowing belts to spin....make sure your a.c. is off when you try to start it to disengage clutch from compressor so the pulley can spin...see if it works that way if it does your compressor is bad..you should be able to drive it without a.c...if you try to turn on a.c. the pulley won't spin cause the clutch will engage and seize pulley from A.c.
