99 Protege cruise speed varies

1999 Protege - 1.6 automatic. The cruise operates properly but there is a wide variation in the speed when cruise is on. Set at 50 mph will slow to about 45 and then speed up to 52-53. Then slows again. The old school fix is to adjust a lost motion link - ANY help on how to keep speed consistent???
Thanks,

Is this on a dead flat road? Is the A/C on?

The cruise varies with and without AC on and on a flat road. The only time it is consistent is on a long gentle uphill run. Is there any way to adjust for the lag? Like I said before it used to be a lost motion link. The servo does have an adjustment for the cable that goes in to it. Would that make a difference? I realize I would have to change it and see what happens and then adjust accordingly.

Any help on the cruise?? It varies enough that if it is set to about 45 mph, it will come out of overdrive, downshift and accelerate up to about 49 then go back to overdrive and settle down.
