1997 mazda 1.5liter:

When the car is in park the idle goes up and down and the motor dies.

When I put the car in drive, the car hesitiates like it’s not getting any gas. As soon as I hit 2nd gear the hesitation is gone.
Highway driving is fine…the only problem is moving the car from a stopped position.

Anyone got any ideas??? EGR valve? Mass Air flow sensor?

I would say that it sounds like the maf, you could try to uplug the harness and make sure there is no dust and debris which could affect the performance this would be the easiest solution in a perfect world, Could be a vaccum leak from somewhere, maybe the intake manifold gaskets, would the throttle position sensor cause this sort of thing?
