95 protege shakes when idle

My 95 protetge shakes when I am at a stop light or what not. I tent to put it in nuetral to avoidit, but now it is also sounding like it will stall and the RPM meter goes down real low then comes back up...like it's sputtering sort of. Aslo when I accelorate, the car sputters; itseems like the belts are slipping maybe? I cannot accelorate like everyone else it takes a long time to get going. Anybody got some ideas?

Try the tune up stuff first. Plugs, cap, rotor and wires. That's the starting point, anyway.

i had the exact same problem, when i came to a stop/idle the engine would kick and sputter, as if it was going to stall... i went to advance auto and got a $2.34 PCV valve, which took all of 1 minute to install, and no more problems, i would try this first, it may help you out..no tools required just your hands, the pcv is simply pulled from the engine and a hose, then you just put the new one where the old one was...

did your check engine light come on? I have an 01 that just started doing that 3 days ago..thought I was running out of gas. Now it does it and the check engine light flashes?

You need to get it scanned for diagnostic trouble codes to find out what is wrong, or at least get it narrowed down to a particular system. Alternatively, you can get a code reader ($80 & up) and do it yourself. The code reader will allow you to clear the code (turn off the light) once the problem has been fixed.
