2002 mazda protege lx cylinder 2 misfire
So i bought this Mazda near the beginning of the year. I love it even though its a beater. Runs goodish, drives good. But lately ive been having a misfire come up occasionally. Itll come and go. Happens mostly when im city driving. I read the code and it says cylinder 2. To me thats very helpful because if it was a fuel pump or filter it wouldnt signify a specific cylinder. I swapped out the coil packs and have been driving it since and it will stutter for a split second and be fine. It hasnt come up with a code yet so Im waiting till it does to see if it followed over to cylinder 4 with the coil pack. But if it doesnt and its still cylinder 2 than Im unsure on where tk go from there.
Sounds like a coil pack from my experience. If I'm reading right you didn't put a new one in, but swapped positions of the existing coils. My suggestion would be to go ahead and replace the packs, wires, and plugs. Of course that's a money no object suggestion, but I bet you won't have any more misfires. Not too terribly expensive though. I did the same on my son's Protege5 earlier this year. I think all in from a dealer was about $150.
It has brand new wires and plugs. The coil pack i swapped over looked like it was older than the other but what confuses me is that if its a coil pack, than shouldnt two cylinders be misfiring? Ever since ive swapped them, when i come to a stop light itll miss once than run fine for a few seconds and keep reapeating. Ive also been adding fuel injector cleaner to the fuel. Its been better than it was before I swapped the coils. But i will most likely replace the coil and hopefully that will solce my issue. I will update the thread shortly after i replace the coil.
Not sure about a single failing coil pack causing one or two cylinder misfires? I know my son's car was generating a code, but don't recall the specifics of that code. Consider replacing both coils. Let us know.
