Default 2002 Mazda Protege engine swap complexity

Hello,

My wife's 2002 Protege 5 engine is fried. It doesn't look like it make financial sense to have a mechanic do an engine swap for us. Has anyone done this?

I've rebuilt a few motorcycle engines and have done a bit of work on cars too, but nothing this complex. I'm wondering how complex this will be. Does anyone know if I can leave the automatic transmission in the car? What about the air conditioning system, can I leave it hooked up and remove it from the engine so I don't have to have someone recharge it?

What are the gotchas in doing this?

Out of curiosity, what fried her engine? And what do you plan on swapping into it?

It really isn't too bad...just a lot of getting things out of your way. I actually just typed a good length explanation for you the lost it. So let me know if you want to get in touch via phone contact and I can give you a basic overview to swapping motors. I've done a few.
