Default I nedd help fixing three codes

Hi everyone,

Can somebody guide on how to fix three codes with my protege 99 1.6 l.
P1512 intake manifold runner stuck closed (bank 1)
P0171 System too lean (bank 1)
P1170 Engine shut off solenoid

When i'm driving up a hill the car looses power, i could even beat him by running.

I'm not really a mechanic but i have always like to fix my cars if the work is not so complex. Can sombedoy assist me on this?

Would really appreciate it.

There is a very good probability that fixing the P0171 code will take care of the other 2 codesweirdo (odd name but I guess then so is babyhuey eh?).

P0171 means that the engine has been running way to lean fuel mixture for too long and the engine computer can no longer compensate for it. The Mass Air Flow sensor being contaminated with soot or other debris is a very common problem to create this code along with the loss of power you are describing. Mazda has even extended the warranty for free replacement on the 99-2000 Protege with 1.6 engine to 7 years or 70,000 miles. If you are still under both of these marks then dealer will replace for you at no charge as per SSP56. If out of this range then cleaning sometimes works or replacement as needed.

P1170 means that the front oxygen sensor is not cycling in voltage as it is supposed to be. This sensor detects oxygen content in the exhaust and sends signal to engine computer so the computer can make needed corrections to fuel delivery. Vacuum leaks, excessive fuel, faulty sensor, etc can cause this to occur and set this code but with MAF not sending the right air flow amount signal (P0171) then the whole fuelfeedback system is screwed up. Fix the P0171 first and P1170 may just take care of itself.

P1512 says that the VTCS or Variable Tumble Control System is stuck closed. This system is simply a set of butterfly valves in the intake manifold that close when coolant is below 176'F. When the valves are closed they make the intake air/fuel charge swirl so they mix better during cold operation. You would not even notice this working or not as it is purely an emissions thing. There is not switch for the valves being open or closed so the PCM is determining that VTCS is stuck closed in large part due to Mass airflow amount is less than expected. Back to P0171 and MAF sensor.

This is great help!

One more thing, where would i find the MAF sensor? How can identify it?

Thanks for your support!

The MAF sensor is located on the top of your air cleaner housing attached with two phillips screws. If power loss is that severe and other codes are being stored it is very, very unlikely that you will be able to successfully clean it. A new sensor is available from the dealer for $136.19 and also available from
www.onlinemazdaparts.com for $108.95. Just use OE part number L321-13-215.
