1998 1.5 Manual Protege Electrical Issue....HELP

Alright so this morning, I jump in the protege, start it up, once its warm I placed my foot on the brake to shift into reverse and the parkinglights, rear brake lights and dashboard lights lit up. I repeatedly touched the brake and let off the pedal and the lights would flicker on and off as I pressed and released the brake pedal.

Once I clicked on the headlights my rear brake lights stayed constantly bright while I drove, the only reason I noticed this was becase the center brake light in the middle of the rear windshield stayed lit while I drove.

Any idea where I could even start investigating this issue? I appreciate all responses! Thanks...

I'd check for a bad ground in the brake light circut. You'd be surprised what a broken ground wire could do.

Curious as to where the exterior light relay is? I spent hours today tracing wires and what not. Ran into a possible issue, with the sensor mounted to the top of the brake pedal under the dash. What is this?

on my ford focus it was the 4 way flasher button all the wires ran to that module and all my lights ran off that. I checked out wireing diagrams for your car and it seems there is only one relay that thats for your headlights. do what zundfolge suggested and look for a bad ground, and if not unplug your battery and plug it back in maybe its just a glitch in the system.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll add that in my mx6, bad grounding due to corrosion on the bulb sockets was doing this. Water was getting into my rear tail light and corroding the sockets, there by causing the entire lighting circuitry to fubar.

When I hit the brakes, the turn signals would turn on. When I turned on my headlights, by brake lights would stop working. When the headlights were on and and turn signals were on and I hit the brakes, only one side of the car would have brighter lights. Totally crazy.

Thats funny you mention that. My front passenger side corner light is missing about a 1" x 1" piece. Maybe I should investigate that as well.

Side note to this, Im wondering what the sensor is that attaches to the top of the brake pedal arm?

I think that is the switch which deactivates the cruise control when you depress the brake pedal.

So my car is doing the same thing as StockLX's car. Any suggestions?
