Default 1997 protege wont rev out, and backfire/bogs out when flooring it

Whats up guys, Im new here, seeing if you guys can help.

A buddy and i got a 97 protege as a yard car, (work for a construction company so we have a huge sand pit to rip around in) so anyway, we are tooling around in the car, caught some air in it, blew out a tire so we slowly drove it back to the garage (was running fine) get it back, and go to pull it into the garage, it started back firing, to the point that you could put the gas to the floor and it would just pop with no RPM gain. But as soon as you take your foot off the gas it idles perfectly. Sat for like 20 minutes idling perfectly.

Checked the plugs and there all getting spark, if you slowly give it gas, to try and clear it out, you can get it to get up to rev limit buy only pushing the gas a very minor amount, but if you go ahead and floor it after it will pop and back fire and just bog out.

Things i think it could be,
1. cat is plugged, all this banging around could of shattered and its all plugged up tomorrow we are going to chop whats left of the exhuast off, ahead of the cat.
2. Going to throw on some new wires, but it idles fine so thats what makes it fishy to me.
3. Maybe fuel pump, but od how it would just randomly crap out like it did, and i tried the trick if turning the key on and off to try and build up a little pressure in the lines with no difference in the symptoms.
4. proteges are not made to fly.

Also for the record we have it on film, because we had a go pro HD helmet camera on the roof, once i load it on youtube ill let you guys see what happened and even have the back firing in the video.

Sorry for such a long post and hope who ever reads it takes the time to read it all. Really want to get this thing going again as its so fun to rip around in.

Sounds like it either jumped timing or the crank sensor is screwed. Either way, jumping your car probably isn't the best idea. I'm sure it was fun though.
