Default 1996 transmission replacement

Whats up,
I am new to the forums but I have recently just bought a 96 protege with 93K miles on it for 150 bucks. The
Manual tranny is basically gone and axles are shot other than that the car is in good condition. So my question is has anyone ever done a transmission on one of these guys before? I am also looking for a 96 MANUAL TRANSMISSION for it with decently low miles I found a few online ranging from $250 to $500. What do you guys think? I am somewhat experienced at mechanical work so if anyone could tell me some issues I might run into along the way that would be great. thanks

Brendan

Default RE: 1996 transmission replacement

the process is fairly simple, it is just extremely time consuming. the axles need to be pulled and that means the lower control arms need to be pulled from the spindles. this is where you would replace the ball joints if they have any play, since you are in there anyways. after that, you just unbolt the shift linkage, then unbolt the tranny. the new one just goes in the way the old one comes out. while you're in there, you could look at the shift linkage to see if there are any stress points and just look for any damage in general that should cause concern later on.
