1993 clutch replacement

How difficult is it to replace the clutch in a 1993? I called my favorite Mazda shop and was quoted $850. They laughed when I told them I wanted to replace the clutch on a 1993. $850 is more than double what the car is worth, but I hate buying cars. I might be willing to try it myself. I figure the worst that can happen is the repair goes south and I have to have it towed away, and then find another car. Finding another car is where I'm going to be at soon anyway if I don't get the clutch fixed.

I've done brakes, timing belt, water pump, speed-o cable, radiator, etc. The usual kind of things a relatively capable person takes on. I've replaced a clutch in a rear wheel drive vehicle too, but I'm cautious about trying a front wheel drive. Am I facing high technical difficulties? Guaranteed stuck bolts that will be difficult to remove?

Thank you,
Gary

Resurrecting my old question... I'm still driving my '93 with a really weak clutch. I'm super careful, but even so I'm not sure it will last three more years. That's when my son is out of college. Spent some time today watching videos of clutch replacement on similar vehicles and read the shop manual on how to do the job. Looks like a lot of work, but also within my skill set. Though it would most certainly be the biggest car repair job I've ever attempted. Has anyone here replaced a clutch, and if so what issues did you run in to, and what is your general mechanical ability?

Make sure do it super safe. Safety is paramount. Follow the instructions step by step & adhere to all torque settings.

Do you have any friends or family members with mechanical experience?
