Timing Gear on Cam Shaft

Hi,

I have a 1991 Mazda b2600i 4x4. A spark plug became fused in the head. So I pulled the head and had it machined.

I used the following video tutorial on how to do this. Of course, he left out the part that has me stumped!

All has gone well up until now … except I cannot get the timing chain gear back on the cam shaft. I remember it was tight getting it off. But I cannot get it back on the cam shaft. I don’t think the chain came off the bottom sprocket … I kept it tight the whole time. I can turn the crank with a wrench and the timing chain moves.

If anyone has any ideas on how to do this I would be very happy!

Thanks!

Don't sometimes gears get heated in oil in an old coffee thing, or in the oven to temporarily expand them, then installed while hot? Leather gloves would be your friend.

That's what's done on old VW gear to install onto the crankshaft.

The tensioner is putting pressure on the chain. You'll have to determine if its spring loaded or uses engine oil and relieve the pressure on the chain.
