Default Sudden change in mileage

I just recently was the recipant of an freebee 91' B2600i. ext cab 4x2. Last week I was getting about 23 to 25 mpg. I installed a leer truck cap on the bed last weekend. mileage is now about 12 mpg. I don't think that should be such a drastic change. Maybe a few mpg, but not 10mpg. Am I barking up the wrong tree, or do I need to do a total tune up. I don't smell any fuel, or notice any leaks. It has about 215k on it. I did shread a alternator belt the 2nd day I drove it. I think that would be totaly unrelated, but this is my 1st non-VW vehicle in quite a while, and I have seen some strange things in VW's. Would this truck have the Mitsu motor?, how would I tell? Thanx for any help...
