There are a number of things that can cause valve train noise. The main problems are oil starvation and/or worn valve train parts. If you haven't changed the oil since the noise started, try that first, including a new oil filter.

If that doesn't help, pull the oil pressure sending unit, attach an oil pressure gauge and make sure you have proper oil pressure. It should be 43 - 57 psi @ 3000 rpm. If you don't have proper oil pressure, you'll need to replace the oil pump. You can pull the pan off the engine without taking the engine out of the truck. You'll need to remove the cross member and the steering link. When installing the oil pan I highly recommend not using a cork pan gasket. Get a tube of good high temp RTV.

If you have good oil pressure you'll need to pull the head. NOTE: You don't need to pull the carburetor and intake manifold out of the vehicle to pull the head - use bungy cords to hold the intake manifold away from the head. After you pull the head, pull the oil filter and make sure there's no blockage in the passage that runs from the oil filter to the head. Then pull the rocker assembly off the head and check all the oil passages to the rocker assembly. Check the oil passages in the rocker arm shafts and the rocker arms. Check the rocker arm to rocker arm shaft clearance. Pull the valves (you can borrow a valve spring compressor from Autozone) and ckeck the valve stem to valve guide clearance. If everything checks out OK at this point, you have a major decision to make - rebuild the head or just replace the valve lifters. If you decide to rebuild the head, take it to a good machine shop and let them decide what parts need to be replaced.

Good luck!

Very nice post, Mikey!! And very good information too. Thank you!

If things do appear to be cloggedand you clean them out as well as you can, but everything else seems to be OK, you might want to add a can of Marvel Mystery Oil, or Z-Max to the crankcase after a fresh oil/filter change too. While MMO is old school it or theZ-Max will help break down any further contamination, sludge, carbon left in the engine, it's oil galleys and oil pan. Be sure to do another oil/filter change in 1000-1500miles to get rid of it.
