I've read the the towing capacity on my B4000 4X4 with auto is around 5800lbs, I have to haul a boat twice a year to marina and it with trailer weigh 6500 lbs. Is this inpractical? I'm guessing they understate actual capacity???

I think that capacity varies with axle ratios but that is the max. Make sure that your truck is actually rated for that amount. There is always a safety margin but probably not by much as towing capacity is a selling points as much as MPG. Fudging by 700 is getting close but are you also considering all of the supplies and equipment that will be jammed into the boat and bed as well. This all adds up fast. Overloading like that can also cook your auto trans oil in as little as a couple hundred miles if not sooner.
