Question 96' Mazda b3000 (need info on what may possibly be wrong, and info on an engine swap)

1 -
i have a 1996 mazda b3000 with a manual transmission that doesnt run or crank. i bought it used about 6 months ago, ran fine for about 5000 miles and died one day going up a hill. i was going up the hill when i heard a hard knocking sound and felt a loss of power, so i pushed in the clutch and pulled over. it died before i stopped. i tried to start it and it seemed like it may be locked up since it wouldnt crank at all and only made a clicking noise like it makes when the battery is dead. after trying this 5 or 6 times there was a small puff of smoke out of the engine bay (hood was up, i think the smoke came from the left side but not sure) and then all of the electronics like the radio and lights stopped working. it wouldnt even make the clicking sound anymore when trying to start it. its been parked for about a month since then.

a friend offered me a 302 from a 66 mustang for free, supposedly runs but needs a little work. i like the idea of putting an old school carbed 302 in that little thing and ive heard quite a few stories of people doing the same thing with ford rangers, so my question is, what all would i have to do to make that work?
