Default 94 Mazda B3000

I recently inherited (my friend gave up trying to get it to work) a 94 Mazda B3000 2wd 5-speed and it will not start, it just cranks and cranks, and yes the battery is new, and all the battery cables have been replaced, and it has gas in the tank, i was just looking to see if anyone could help me with just some basic tips to get me pointed in the right direction to get this fixed. My friend replaced the. . . dont quote me on this. . .ignition module, a little black box in the front of the truck, his mechanic said that would fix the problem, but didn't. I just was looking for some help so i don't spend a ton of money fixing things that don't need to be fixed. I just don't want to waste money, i have a show civic to do that on, so any help would be appreciated.

It is the ignition control module that was replaced. Could it be a fuel pump? PCM fuse? Or should i just dump the battery for a new one? Since no one has said anything, maybe this could spur someone to say anything to help before i spend money on this truck.

take the # 1 spark plug out and turn the engine over (clockwise) so the marks line up on the crankshaft pully and TDC markon the timeing cover, then use a skinny screw driver to feel if your piston in # 1 cylinder is all the way up, if not, turn the engine over one revolution so the marks are lined up again, check to see if piston is up, now that the piston is up and the marks are lined up take the distributor cap off and verify the rotor is pointing to # 1 (follow # 1 plug wire to the cap, with the cap on the dist. the rotor should be pointing to number one) DO NOT TURN ENGINE OVER WITH SCREW DRIVER IN SPARPLUG HOLE. if all checks out good, then check for spark, if that checks good then it probly is the fuel pump or filter (s) hope this helps.

Stick your ear to the gas filler neck or put a hose in the tank and put it to your ear while someone turns on the key. Listen for a whining sound of the fuel pump. It should run for a 2 or 3 seconds every time you turn the key on. If you don't hear this pump noise then the pump is not working. This does not necessarily mean it's the pump. It could be the relay or the safety switch that shuts off the fuel pump when in an accident. Sometimes if you hit a big bump hard enough it will trigger this switch and shut off the fuel. ItDOES have a re-set. I'm not sure where it is located. Usually behind the right side kick panel.
