89 b2200 starter? problem

Default 89 b2200 starter? problem

Ok so a couple weeks ago the truck wouldn't start at a gas station so my dad got out hit on the starter a couple times with a hammer and the truck started again.

This worked for almost a month, at first it would only not start every couple days then it got to the point where every time I needed to start it I had to smack the starter a couple times with a hammer.

Now it will not start at all. I have taken the starter off and had it tested at oreillys and they said it passed every test. I just replaced the solenoid today and it still wont start. When I turn the key I hear a click from somewhere. What could be the problem?

well if the starter tested good and you have a new solinoid and you here the click of the solinoid.
the positive or negative wires must have resistance/rust/rot in the cables.
the key will activate the solinoid(hd switch for the starter).if the power(amps) is not at the terminal from the battery to the starter it'll turn slow or not at all.
clean the terminals at the battery,check the ends of the cables at the starter and the ground on the engine block,
you'll either see broken wires or rusty connections(limit volts/current flow).

oh and may want to have the battery tested as well,maybe a dead cell or just a bad battery.

OK, sounds like the no-start condition is for failure of the starter to spin the engine (not a spinning engine that doesn't start).

Good picture, above post. The smaller red wire must have voltage EVERY TIME the ignition switch is held in the "start" position. That tests the ignition switch.

Put voltmeter across battery terminals and post voltage here. Then try to start, hold for 10 seconds, and have helper read voltage again while still trying to crank; that must be above 9.6 volts or battery is bad. If that's above 9.6 volts, measure the voltage at the starter big red wire as you do the same, see if that's greater than 9.6 volts.

Did you or pops ever try to jump start using a different vehicle? That can also help troubleshoot failure of a starter not spinning the engine.

Post back with what you find; I've experienced most such issues to be battery-related. And of course terminals, connections, cables must be in good shape.
